New York City Officially Declares April 14 as 'Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Day'.

In April 2025, New York City (NYC), United States of America (USA), officially proclaimed April 14 as 'Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Day' to mark the 134th birth anniversary of Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar. This historic declaration honours Dr. Ambedkar's monumental contributions to justice, equality, and human rights on a global platform.


      - The proclamation was formally announced by NYC Mayor Eric Adams, recognising Dr. Ambedkar’s legacy as a global icon of social justice. The announcement underlined the significance of his lifelong efforts to fight caste discrimination and promote democratic values and social empowerment.

      - The declaration was delivered by Dilip Chauhan, Deputy Commissioner for the New York City Mayor’s Office for International Affairs, during a special commemorative event. This event was held at the United Nations (UN) Headquarters in New York, further amplifying its global relevance and respect for Dr. Ambedkar’s legacy.

      - The commemorative event was organised by the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations, showcasing India's pride in celebrating Dr. Ambedkar's life and ideals on an international stage. The event was also attended by Dr. Ramdas Athawale, Union Minister of State (MoS), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MoSJE), Government of India.

Main Point :-   (i) Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar was born on 14 April 1891 in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh, India. He played a transformative role in shaping modern India, particularly in championing the rights of marginalized communities and promoting inclusive governance.

      (ii) As the Chairman of the Drafting Committee of the Indian Constituent Assembly, Dr. Ambedkar is hailed as the Architect of the Indian Constitution. The Drafting Committee originally consisted of seven members: Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Alladi Krishnaswami Ayyar, N. Gopalaswami Ayyangar, K. M. Munshi, Mohammad Saadulla, Madhava Rao (who replaced B.L. Mitter), and T.T. Krishnamachari (who replaced D.P. Khaitan).

(iii) A tireless social reformer, Dr. Ambedkar led campaigns against caste-based discrimination and worked extensively for Dalit rights, women’s empowerment, and labour reforms. His slogan, "Educate, Agitate, Organize," continues to inspire human rights movements across the globe, cementing his legacy as a universal symbol of equality and justice.
