Cricket Set to Make Olympic Comeback After 128 Years at LA 2028 Games.

Sports

In April 2025, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland, officially confirmed that cricket will return to the Olympic Games at the 2028 Los Angeles (LA) Olympics after a 128-year hiatus. Cricket last featured at the 1900 Paris Olympics, where only one match was played between Great Britain and France.

      - The Olympic cricket event will follow the T20 (Twenty20) format, with six teams each in the men's and women's tournaments vying for medals.

      - A total of 90 athlete slots have been allocated for each gender, permitting 15-member squads per team. This marks a significant addition to the Games, which will feature a record 351 medal events at LA 2028—22 more than the Paris 2024 Olympics. Despite this expansion, the overall athlete quota remains capped at 10,500, with 698 additional slots allotted to accommodate new sports.

      - While the final qualification process is yet to be detailed, the host nation—the United States of America (USA)—is expected to receive a direct entry. The remaining teams will qualify based on the International Cricket Council (ICC) rankings.

Main Point :-   (i) The venues for the cricket tournaments in Los Angeles are yet to be finalized, and details regarding scheduling will be released closer to the event.

(ii) The ICC currently includes 12 full-member countries—such as India, Australia, and England—alongside 94 associate members, many of whom could be contenders for Olympic qualification.
