Justice Dinesh Maheshwari Named Chairperson of 23rd Law Commission of India.

Appointment

In April 2025, the Ministry of Law and Justice (MoL&J) appointed Justice Dinesh Maheshwari, former judge of the Supreme Court of India, as the Chairperson of the 23rd Law Commission of India (LCI). He succeeds Justice (Retired) Ritu Raj Awasthi, the previous chairperson.


      - Alongside his appointment, Advocate Hitesh Jain and Professor D.P. Verma have been inducted as full-time members of the 23rd LCI. Their tenure will continue until 31st August 2027.

     

     

Main Point :-   (i) The 23rd Law Commission of India was formally constituted with effect from 1st September 2024, for a three-year term, following the completion of the 22nd Commission's tenure on 31st August 2024.

      (ii) The primary objectives of the Commission include reviewing obsolete and outdated laws to recommend suitable repeals or amendments, and evaluating the feasibility of implementing a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) across the country.
