National Safe Motherhood Day (NSMD) is observed annually in India on 11 April to highlight the importance of maternal healthcare, encourage safe delivery practices, and work towards reducing maternal mortality rates.


      - The observance also marks the birth anniversary of Kasturba Gandhi (born 11 April 1869), the wife of Mahatma Gandhi, symbolizing the nation’s commitment to protecting maternal health.

      - In 2025, the focus of NSMD was on accelerating efforts to achieve equitable access to quality maternal care.

     

Main Point :-   (i) The day was initiated by White Ribbon Alliance India (WRA India), a New Delhi-based grassroots organization advocating for women’s health rights.

      (ii) The Government of India (GOI) officially declared 11 April as National Safe Motherhood Day in 2003, with the first observance taking place that year.

(iii) India is the only country in the world to have a nation-specific day dedicated to motherhood, underlining its unique and focused approach to maternal welfare.
