Sahitya Akademi Awardee & Eminent Malayalam Linguist Venugopala Panikkar Passes Away.

Obituary

On April 3, 2025, eminent Malayalam linguist and writer Venugopala Panikkar passed away at the age of 80 in Kozhikode, Kerala. He was born on August 2, 1945, in Ernakulam, Kerala. In 2005, he was honored with the Sahitya Akademi Award for translating the Tamil novel Koonanthoppu by Thoppil Mohammed Meeran into Malayalam.


      - Venugopala Panikkar began his career as a research assistant at the University of Madras (Tamil Nadu) in 1971.

      - He joined the Malayalam Department at the University of Calicut (Kerala) as a faculty member in 1973.

      - He served as the Head of the Malayalam Department at Kannur University (Kerala) from 2003 to 2005 and retired in 2006.

Main Point :-   (i) In 2015, Venugopala Panikkar received the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Lifetime Achievement.

      (ii) He presented papers at over 100 national and international seminars and authored notable books such as Swanamandalam, Noam Chomsky, Bhashartham, and Bhashalokam.
