According to the Ministry of Railways (MoR), India has emerged as a global leader in railway locomotive manufacturing by producing a record 1,681 locomotives in the financial year 2024-25 (FY25).
- This marks a 19% increase over the 1,472 locomotives produced in FY24, with an addition of 209 locomotives.
- With this feat, India has surpassed the total locomotive production of regions such as the United States of America (USA), Europe, South America, Africa and Australia.
Main Point :- (i) Driven by the 'Make in India' initiative, locomotive manufacturing has seen remarkable growth. Between 2014 and 2024, India produced 9,168 locomotives, averaging nearly 917 annually. In comparison, only 4,695 locomotives were produced between 2004 and 2014, with an annual average of 470.
(ii) West Bengal-based Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW) led the output with 700 locomotives. It was followed by Uttar Pradesh-based Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW) with 477 locomotives, Punjab’s Patiala Locomotive Works (PLW) with 304 units, and Bihar’s Madhepura and Marhowrah units, each contributing 100 locomotives.
(iii) The WAG-9/9H freight locomotive topped production with 1,047 units in FY25. It was followed by WAP-7 (272 units), WAG-9 Twin (148 units), WAG-12B (100 units), WDG-4G/6G (100 units), WAG-9HH (7 units), NRC (5 units), and WAP-5 (2 units).
