The IUCN has released the first Green Status Assessment for Lions in Africa and India.
International
In March 2025, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), based in Gland (Switzerland), released its first Green Status Assessment for the Lion (scientific name: Panthera leo). The report labeled the lion as 'largely depleted,' while it continues to be listed as 'Vulnerable' on the IUCN Red List.
- The latest IUCN assessment showed that human activities are preventing lions from being fully ecologically functional across large areas. Lions are also now extinct in North Africa and South-west Asia.
Main Point :- (i) The IUCN first introduced the 'green status' in a paper published in the journal Conservation Biology in July 2021. The green status was developed to give a full conservation picture of a species.
(ii) The new assessment method has 9 recovery categories: fully recovered, slightly depleted, moderately depleted, largely depleted, critically depleted, extinct in the wild, and indeterminate.
