On March 23, 2025, Dilma Vana Rousseff, the former President of Brazil, was re-elected as the President of the New Development Bank (NDB) (formerly known as BRICS Development Bank) for a term extending until 2030, following unanimous approval by the NDB board.
- This decision came after Russia proposed the extension during the 2024 BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia.
- Her tenure is set to conclude in July 2025. With her reappointment for another term, she will focus on enhancing financial independence for BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) countries, promoting sustainable development projects, and advancing efforts towards de-dollarization.
Main Point :- (i) Dilma Vana Rousseff is a Brazilian economist and politician who began her political career in the 1970s as a member of left-wing and Marxist urban guerrilla groups opposing Brazil’s military dictatorship.
(ii) She joined the Workers' Party (PT) in 2001, served as Minister of Mines and Energy (2003) under President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and later became Brazil’s first female Chief of Staff. She was the 36th President of Brazil (2011-2016) and the only woman to hold the presidency, before being impeached on August 31, 2016.
(iii) In March 2023, she became the Chair of the New Development Bank (NDB), succeeding Marcos Troyjo.
