Córdoba, Fortaleza, and Greater Manchester Recognized at 2025 Partnership for Healthy Cities Summit in France.

On 21st March 2025, the cities of Córdoba (Argentina), Fortaleza (Brazil), and Greater Manchester (United Kingdom, UK) were honored at the 2025 Partnership for Healthy Cities Summit held in Paris, France. The cities were recognized for their significant efforts in preventing Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and injuries.
- The awards acknowledged measurable improvements made by the three cities in addressing NCDs such as heart diseases, cancer, diabetes, and injuries, which are responsible for over 80% of global deaths, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
- The Partnership for Healthy Cities Summit is an annual event that gathers global leaders to discuss and promote effective strategies for preventing NCDs and injuries in urban settings. The 2025 summit took place in Paris from March 18 to 21, 2025.
- The 2025 summit was co-hosted by Bloomberg Philanthropies, the WHO, Vital Strategies, and the City of Paris. The summit saw participation from mayors and officials from 61 cities, including leaders from Bogotá (Colombia), Colombo (Sri Lanka), Guadalajara (Mexico), Kampala (Uganda), Montevideo (Uruguay), Quito (Ecuador), and Santiago (Chile).
Main Point :- (i) Launched in 2017, the Partnership for Healthy Cities is a global network of 74 cities aimed at reducing NCDs and injuries. This network impacts over 300 million people worldwide and provides policy training through its Policy Accelerator initiative.
(ii) Córdoba, Argentina, was recognized for implementing a healthy school food policy, which aims to eliminate sugary drinks and ultra-processed foods in all schools by 2026. So far, 26 schools and 15,000 students (out of 138,000) have benefited from this initiative.
(iii) Fortaleza, Brazil, established the city's first legal framework for air quality surveillance in 2023, ensuring continuous monitoring of air pollutants with the installation of low-cost sensors. Greater Manchester, UK, expanded outdoor smoke-free areas, including a 6.5-acre smoke-free park, and launched a toolkit and communication guide to assist National Health Service (NHS) hospitals, which is part of a broader smoke-free strategy being scaled across the region.Fortaleza, Brazil, established the city's first legal framework for air quality surveillance in 2023, ensuring continuous monitoring of air pollutants with the installation of low-cost sensors.
