The United Nations (UN's) International Day of Women and Girls in Science (IDWGIS) is observed annually on February 11 across the globe to promote equal access and participation for women and girls in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). This day also highlights gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls in the scientific community.
- February 11, 2025, marks the 10th anniversary of IDWGIS and the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.
- The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and UN-Women lead the celebration, working alongside various institutions and civil society organizations committed to advancing women and girls in science.
Main Point :- (i) On December 20, 2013, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a resolution on science, technology, and innovation for development.
(ii) Building on these efforts, on December 22, 2015, the UNGA adopted resolution A/RES/70/212, officially declaring February 11 as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
(iii) The first-ever IDWGIS was observed on February 11, 2016.
