India is undergoing a remarkable transformation in Artificial Intelligence (AI), fueled by initiatives such as the IndiaAI Mission and the establishment of Centres of Excellence (CoE) for AI, which are strengthening India's AI ecosystem.
- These efforts align with the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047, aiming to position India as a global AI hub, utilizing advanced technology to drive economic growth, enhance governance, and promote societal progress.
- In 2024, the Government of India (GoI) approved the IndiaAI Mission with an outlay of Rs 10,300 crore over five years to boost AI capabilities in India.
- The Mission is being implemented by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity) through the 'IndiaAI' Independent Business Division (IBD) under Digital India Corporation (DIC).
Main Point :- (i) Under the IndiaAI Mission, the Government of India (GoI) aims to create one of the most extensive AI compute infrastructures globally, with a high-end common computing facility equipped with 18,693 Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). So far, the GoI has established three Centres of Excellence (CoE) in AI, focusing on healthcare, agriculture, and sustainable cities.
(ii) The CoE in healthcare is led by IIT Delhi and AIIMS Delhi, the agriculture CoE by IIT Ropar, Punjab, and the sustainable cities CoE by IIT Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. A new CoE in AI for education has been announced for the Union Budget FY 2025-26, with an outlay of Rs 500 crore.
(iii) Additionally, the GoI plans to establish five National CoEs for Skilling in collaboration with international partners. These centres will focus on training youth in AI industry-relevant skills, supporting India's vision of 'Make for India, Make for the World' in manufacturing and AI innovation.
