Infineon Technologies and CDIL Sign MoU to Boost Power Semiconductor Manufacturing in India.

Economy Business

On 6th March 2025, Munich (Germany)-based Infineon Technologies AG, a global leader in power systems and Internet of Things (IoT) semiconductors, signed its first Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with New Delhi (Delhi)-based Continental Device India Limited (CDIL), India's first semiconductor manufacturer.

      - The agreement aims to strengthen domestic production of power semiconductors crucial for sectors such as renewable energy, automotive, and industrial applications.

      - This collaboration aligns with India's 'Semiconductor Mission,' which seeks to reduce import dependency and achieve self-reliance under the 'Make in India' initiative.

      - Under the MoU, Infineon Technologies AG will supply bare semiconductor wafers to CDIL, which will process, assemble, and package them into discrete and module semiconductor products.

Main Point :-   (i) These chips will power various applications, including solar technology, Electric Vehicles (EVs), Power Inverters (PIs), and Energy-Efficient Appliances (EEAs). The Indian government aims to roll out the first 'Made in India' semiconductor chip by late 2025, with five semiconductor manufacturing units currently under construction across India.

(ii) The key focus areas for this collaboration include Automotive and Mobility, which covers power semiconductors for EVs, charging infrastructure, and automotive electronics; Renewable Energy, with chips for solar inverters, wind turbines, and grid management systems; and Industrial and Consumer Applications, including energy-efficient solutions for appliances, industrial automation, and IoT devices.

(iii) Additionally, the partnership lays the groundwork for future innovation in Silicon Carbide (SiC) and advanced semiconductor technologies. Furthermore, Kyoto (Japan)-based Horiba, a leading provider of analytical and measurement solutions, has announced plans to establish a manufacturing unit in India, contributing to the country's growing semiconductor sector.
