India Achieves Historic Milestone of 100 GW Solar Power Capacity Strengthening Global Renewable Energy Leadership.

National

In February 2025, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), announced that India has achieved a historic milestone by surpassing 100 Giga Watt (GW) installed solar energy capacity. This milestone reinforces India's position as a global leader in Renewable Energy (RE).

      - This achievement underscores India’s commitment to a cleaner and greener future, marking a crucial step toward achieving its ambitious target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based energy capacity by 2030, set by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi.

      - According to MNRE, India's solar power capacity has witnessed an exponential growth of 3450% in the last decade, rising from 2.82 GW in 2014 to 100 GW in 2025.

Main Point :-   (i) As of January 31, 2025, India's total installed solar energy capacity stands at 100.33 GW, with 84.10 GW under implementation and an additional 47.49 GW under tendering.

(ii) Solar energy remains the key driver of India's RE sector, contributing 47% of the total installed RE capacity.

(iii) Top 5 Indian states leading in utility-scale solar installations are: Rajasthan, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu (TN), Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh (MP).
