The United Nations (UN) observes World Pulses Day (WPD) annually on February 10 to emphasize the significance of pulse crops like chickpeas, dry beans, and lentils in global food systems.
- Theme of WPD 2025: "Pulses: Bringing diversity to agrifood systems" – highlighting the essential role of pulses in promoting diversity above and below the ground.
- Slogan of WPD 2025: "Love pulses for a healthy diet and planet."
- On December 20, 2013, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) proclaimed 2016 as the International Year of Pulses, aiming to raise awareness about their nutritional and environmental benefits in sustainable food production.
Main Point :- (i) The UNGA adopted resolution A/RES/73/251 on December 20, 2018, officially designating February 10 as WPD every year. The proposal for this observance was made by Burkina Faso, a landlocked West African country.
(ii) The first-ever WPD was observed on February 10, 2019.
(iii) The day was established following the successful implementation of the International Year of Pulses (IYP) in 2016 by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
