Union Budget 2025-26 Highlights India's 100 GW Nuclear Power Target by 2047 and ₹20,000 Crore Allocated for Indigenous SMRs.

On February 1, 2025, Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Ministry of Finance (MoF), presented the Union Budget 2025-26, emphasizing nuclear energy as a key sector. The budget focuses on developing indigenous nuclear technology, encouraging private sector participation, and making significant investments in nuclear infrastructure.


      - India has set an ambitious target of 100 Gigawatts (GW) of nuclear power by 2047, aligning with its long-term energy strategy.

      - This initiative aims to enhance energy security, reduce fossil fuel dependence, and support the vision of Viksit Bharat (Developed India).

     

Main Point :-   (i) The Nuclear Energy Mission for Viksit Bharat is a significant initiative aimed at advancing research and innovation in nuclear power, thereby enhancing India's domestic nuclear capabilities.

      (ii) To facilitate this, the government has earmarked Rs 20,000 crore (USD 2.6 billion) for the development of five indigenous Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) by 2033.

(iii) The Government of India has set a target to increase nuclear power capacity from 8,180 MW in 2024 to 22,480 MW by 2031-32, reinforcing the country's commitment to clean energy and energy security.
