Romanian Tennis Star Simona Halep Announces Retirement from Professional Tennis.

On February 4, 2025, Romania’s Simona Halep, a two-time Grand Slam champion and former world No. 1 in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings, announced her retirement from professional tennis at the age of 33.


      - Her decision followed a 6-1, 6-1 first-round defeat to Lucia Bronzetti at the 2025 Transylvania Open in Romania.

      - In 2017, she achieved the world No. 1 ranking in the WTA, holding the position for a total of 64 weeks.

     

Main Point :-   (i) Simona Halep won two Grand Slam singles titles—first at the 2018 French Open, where she defeated Sloane Stephens, and then at the 2019 Wimbledon Championship, securing victory over Serena Williams.

      (ii) She finished as the runner-up in three Grand Slam finals: the 2018 Australian Open, as well as the French Open in 2014 and 2017. Over her career, she secured 24 WTA singles titles and earned more than USD 40 million in prize money. At the time of her retirement, she was ranked No. 870 in the world.

(iii) In the 2022 United States (US) Open, Simona Halep tested positive for Roxadustat following her first-round loss. Initially handed a four-year ban, her suspension was later reduced to nine months by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in 2024.
