Appointment

In January 2025, Ahmed al-Sharaa, an Islamist leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), was appointed as Syria's interim president following the 'The Conference for Announcing the Victory of the Syrian Revolution' event in Damascus, Syria. He succeeds Bashar al-Assad, the former leader of the Syrian Ba'ath Party, whose government fell on December 8, 2024, after nearly 14 years of efforts to maintain power.


      - Syria's previous constitution and parliament were dissolved, and Ahmed al-Sharaa was granted the authority to establish a temporary legislative council for the transitional phase.

     

     

Main Point :-   (i) Ahmed al-Sharaa, also known as Abu Muhammad al-Jolani, is the leader of HTS. Initially linked to al-Qaeda, the group has since disavowed its former affiliations.

      (ii) In 2003, he left Syria to join Al-Qaeda in Iraq, led by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, and was subsequently detained for five years, which delayed his advancement within the organization.

(iii) In 2011, amid Syria's civil war, he founded the Al-Nusra Front, the Syrian branch of al-Qaeda, which later evolved into HTS. By 2016, Ahmed al-Sharaa distanced himself from al-Qaeda and rebranded HTS as a nationalist force, moving away from its jihadist insurgency roots.
