"Soumitra Chatterjee and His World", a comprehensive biography authored by journalist Sanghamitra Chakraborty, was launched at the Kolkata Literary Meet in West Bengal (WB). The book is published by Penguin India’s Vintage Books.


      - The biography highlights the multifaceted life of Soumitra Chatterjee, an iconic Indian and Bengali film actor renowned for his collaboration with legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray and his remarkable contributions to Indian cinema and culture.

      - It also delves into his diverse roles as an actor, poet, editor, and artist, providing a vivid portrayal of Bengal’s rich cultural landscape.

     

Main Point :-   (i) Soumitra Chatterjee was born in 1935 in Kolkata, West Bengal, and passed away in 2020. He starred in 14 of Satyajit Ray's films, including iconic works such as Apur Sansar (The World of Apu), Sonar Kella (The Golden Fortress), Joy Baba Felunath (The Elephant God), Devi (The Goddess), Charulata (The Lonely Wife), and Ghare Baire (The Home and the World).

      (ii) Soumitra’s legendary characters, such as Apu and Feluda, have become household names among Bengalis and cinema enthusiasts worldwide.

(iii) He was the first Indian film personality to receive France’s highest artistic honor, Commandeur of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (1999). His accolades include the Padma Bhushan (2004), two National Film Awards (2007 and 2017), and the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award (2012), India's highest honor in cinema.
