Uttarakhand Becomes the First State to Enforce Uniform Civil Code.

Uttarakhand has become the first state in India to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), which came into effect on 27th January 2025. Uttarakhand Chief Minister (CM) Pushkar Singh Dhami launched the UCC portal and issued a notification marking the adoption of the civil code at a ceremony in Dehradun, Uttarakhand.


      - The UCC seeks to unify personal laws concerning marriage, divorce, succession, and inheritance, ensuring equality for all citizens, except for those from Scheduled Tribes (ST).

      - The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is a proposed framework designed to establish a unified set of personal laws applicable to all citizens, irrespective of their religious beliefs.

      - Personal laws governing marriage, divorce, inheritance, adoption, and maintenance are currently based on the religious customs and scriptures of various communities.

Main Point :-   (i) On February 7, 2024, the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly passed the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, which received assent from President Droupadi Murmu on March 13, 2024. The bill establishes uniform personal laws on marriage, divorce, succession, and inheritance, applicable to all citizens of the state, regardless of religion.

      (ii) The Uttarakhand government introduced the Uttarakhand Uniform Civil Code Act, 2024, providing a structured process for creating and canceling wills and codicils under inheritance laws.

(iii) The law applies across the state of Uttarakhand and is also effective for Uttarakhand residents living outside the state.
