Nigeria Becomes the 9th Partner Country to Join BRICS.

In January 2025, the government of Brazil, holding the BRICS presidency, announced that Nigeria, the world's 6th largest population and Africa's largest country, officially joined BRICS as the 9th Partner Country.
- Other Partner countries of the BRICS bloc include Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan.
- BRICS was initiated following the 2006 meeting of the leaders of Russia, India, and China in St. Petersburg, Russia.
- The BRICS grouping was formalized during the first meeting of foreign ministers from BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China) on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, USA, in 2006.
Main Point :- (i) The first BRICS summit took place in Yekaterinburg, Russia, in 2009.
(ii) The group was renamed as BRICS after South Africa was accepted as a full member in 2010.
(iii) The 16th BRICS Summit, held under the chairmanship of Russian President Vladimir Putin, took place in Kazan, Russia, from October 22 to 24, 2024, with the theme "Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security."
