Nawaf Abdallah Salim Salam Appointed as Lebanon's 53rd Prime Minister.

Appointment

In January 2025, Nawaf Abdallah Salim Salam was appointed as Lebanon's 53rd Prime Minister (PM). He secured 78 votes out of 128 Members of Parliament (MPs) and will succeed the incumbent PM, Najib Azmi Mikati. Currently, he serves as the President of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, Netherlands.


      (i) Nawaf Abdallah Salim Salam is a distinguished Lebanese politician, diplomat, jurist, and academic with a notable career in international law and diplomacy.

      (ii) He began his legal career in 1984 as an appellate lawyer and served as an advisor and representative for various local and international organizations between 1984 to 1989 and 1992 to 2007.

      (iii) As Lebanon's Ambassador to the UN, he voted 210 times to condemn Israel and opposed UN resolutions condemning actions by Iran, Lebanon, Cuba, and Syria.

Main Point :-   (i) Salam served as Lebanon's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) in New York from 2007 to 2017.

      (ii) He was a judge at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) from 2009 to 2018 and held positions such as President of the UN Security Council (UNSC) and Vice President of the 67th UN General Assembly (UNGA).

(iii) In February 2024, he became the 27th President of the ICJ, becoming the 2nd Arab and the first Lebanese to hold this prestigious position.
