Uttarakhand has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Verkis of Iceland for the development of geothermal energy.

The Government of Uttarakhand has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Verkis Consulting Engineers, an Icelandic company, to explore and develop geothermal energy in the state.


      - The agreement was signed in a virtual ceremony with Uttarakhand's Chief Minister, Pushkar Singh Dhami, and Iceland's Ambassador, Dr. Benedict Hoskulsson, present.

      - The MoU aims to assess and promote geothermal energy at selected sites in Uttarakhand.

     

Main Point :-   (i) The feasibility studies for these projects will be funded by the Government of Iceland.

      (ii) The project has received necessary approvals from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), and the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

(iii) The Geological Survey of India (GSI), based in Kolkata (West Bengal), and the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology (WIHG), based in Dehradun (Uttarakhand), have identified 40 geothermal hotspots in Uttarakhand.
