Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan Marks 9 Years of Advancing Accessibility for Persons with Disabilities on December 3, 2024.

On December 3, 2024, Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan, also known as the Accessible India Campaign (AIC), a flagship initiative by the Government of India (GOI) for persons with disabilities (PwDs), completed 9 years of successful implementation.


      - The campaign aims to ensure universal accessibility for PwDs across three key areas: built infrastructure, transport systems, and the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) ecosystem.

      - The initiative was launched by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi on December 3, 2015, in observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

      - It is monitored by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPWD), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MoSJ&E).

Main Point :-   (i) To date, 1,671 government buildings have been audited for accessibility, with a target of auditing 25 to 50 buildings across 50 cities.

      (ii) A fund of Rs 562 crore has been allocated for the retrofitting of 1,314 buildings.
