Singapore conferred the prestigious Honorary Citizen Award on Tarun Das, former Director General of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), recognizing his remarkable contributions to strengthening ties between Singapore and India.
- The Honorary Citizen Award was presented to Tarun Das by Singapore's President, Tharman Shanmugaratnam, during a special ceremony held in New Delhi on 15th January 2025.
- Tarun Das is the second Indian recipient of this esteemed award, following Ratan Tata, the former chairman of the Tata Group, who was awarded the same honor in 2008.
- Tarun Das served as the Director General and Chief Mentor of CII for over 40 years, playing a pivotal role in shaping India’s business landscape and fostering economic cooperation between India and Singapore.
Main Point :- (i) In 1993, Tarun Das led the first delegation of Indian industrialists to Singapore under India’s “Look East” policy, paving the way for annual visits to enhance political and business ties between the two nations.
(ii) He was instrumental in establishing the India-Singapore Strategic Dialogue (ISSD), a crucial platform for business leaders, policymakers, and academia to discuss strengthening bilateral cooperation in trade, technology, and more.
(iii) Beyond his work with CII, Tarun Das has held leadership roles in organizations like the Singapore-India Partnership Foundation (SIPF) and contributed to initiatives like the SIPF Students Immersion Programme to India, which aims to promote educational and cultural exchanges between India and Singapore. He was also honored with the Singapore Public Service Medal in 2004 for his exceptional service.
