Russia Transfers BRICS Chairmanship to Brazil at Sherpa Meeting in Ekaterinburg.

The final Sherpa and Sous-Sherpa meeting of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) was held in Ekaterinburg, Russia, from 27th to 28th November 2024.


      - The meeting witnessed the ceremonial handover of the BRICS chairmanship from Russia to Brazil, marking the conclusion of a significant year for the bloc under Russia's leadership.

      - Sergey Ryabkov, Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister and BRICS Sherpa, highlighted the progress made by BRICS nations in key areas such as politics, security, economics, and humanitarian initiatives.

      - During its tenure, Russia organised over 250 events aimed at strengthening cooperation within BRICS.

Main Point :-   (i) Under Russia's presidency, key agreements were signed, including the establishment of a BRICS grain exchange, formation of a contact group on climate and sustainable development, creation of a geological, technological, and investment platform, and initiation of a working group on nuclear medicine.

      (ii) The XVI BRICS Summit, held in Kazan from 22nd to 24th October 2024 under Russia's presidency, resulted in the adoption of the Kazan Declaration and marked BRICS' expansion with Egypt, Iran, the UAE, and Ethiopia joining as full members, while Belarus, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand became BRICS partners.

(iii) Brazil is expected to build on the solid groundwork laid during Russia’s presidency to further enhance collaboration among BRICS members and its new partners.
