DRDO Successfully Concludes User Trials of HIMKAVACH Clothing System for Cold Weather Military Operations.

Science and Technology

On January 10, 2025, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) announced the successful completion of user trials for its HIMKAVACH multi-layer clothing system in extreme cold weather conditions.

      - The HIMKAVACH multi-layer clothing system aims to enhance soldier performance by improving mobility, comfort, and durability in extreme cold environments.

      - Designed to protect soldiers in temperatures ranging from +20°C to -60°C, it is especially suitable for high-altitude military operations, particularly in the Himalayan region.

Main Point :-   (i) The system features a modular, multi-layer structure, enabling soldiers to add or remove layers according to weather conditions, ensuring optimal comfort and mobility.

(ii) Previously, the Indian Army (IA) utilized the Extreme Cold Weather Clothing System (ECWCS), a 3-layered outfit developed by DRDO's Defence Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences (DIPAS). This system offered insulation, waterproofing, and a reversible outer layer for camouflage in both snowy and non-snowy terrains.
