On January 11, 2025, India became a member of the United Nations Committee of Experts on Big Data and Data Science for Official Statistics (UN-CEBD). This membership highlights India's growing influence in the global statistical community and its commitment to using data and technology for better policy-making.
- India also joined the United Nations Statistical Council (UNSC) in 2024.
- India's inclusion in the expert committee on Big Data and Data Science for official statistics emphasizes its role in shaping global standards and highlights its pioneering initiatives, such as establishing a Data Innovation Lab for experimenting with new data technologies and exploring alternative data sources like satellite imagery and machine learning for policymaking.
- Data Science is an interdisciplinary field combining statistics, mathematics, programming, and domain knowledge to derive insights from data, while Big Data refers to large, complex datasets beyond the capacity of traditional data tools to process effectively.
Main Point :- (i) India aims to align its Big Data advancements with global objectives and modernize statistical processes using innovative data sources like IoT, satellite imagery, and private sector data for improved accuracy and efficiency.
(ii) India's participation aims to enhance real-time, evidence-based decision-making and streamline statistical production by innovating data collection, processing, and analysis.
(iii) The UN-CEBD, established in 2014 and headquartered in New York, USA, comprises 31 member countries and 16 international organizations, focusing on leveraging Big Data for monitoring Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with its Advisory Board serving as the management body.
