Joseph Khalil Aoun Recently Elected as Lebanon's 14th President.

Appointment

On January 9, 2025, General Joseph Khalil Aoun was elected as the 14th President of Lebanon. He secured 99 out of 128 votes in the parliamentary election during the legislature's 13th attempt to choose a successor to former President Michel Naim Aoun, whose term concluded in October 2022.


      - He is the fifth army commander in Lebanon's history to become president and currently serves as the Commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF).

      - Joseph Khalil Aoun joined the Lebanese Army in 1983 during the Civil War, receiving training in the USA and Syria. He served as a Platoon Commander in the Army Rangers and participated in several key operations, including the 'Adma Battle' in Lebanon.

      - Joseph Khalil Aoun, promoted to General in 2013, led the 9th Infantry Brigade and became the 14th Commander of the LAF in 2017. He successfully led counter-terrorism operations against the 'Islamic State' and 'Al-Nusra Front,' with his term extended twice in December 2023 during the 2024 Israeli invasion.

Main Point :-   (i) Joseph Khalil Aoun has been awarded several military honors, including the War Medal (three times), the Medal of the Wounded (twice), and the Order of Merit in various classes for his exceptional service in the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF).

      (ii) He has also received the National Order of the Cedar, with distinctions as both Knight and Officer.
