UJALA Scheme and SLNP Program Celebrate 10 Years of Advancing Energy-Efficient Lighting.

On January 5, 2025, the Unnat Jyoti by Affordable Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) for All (UJALA) scheme, a transformative initiative by the Government of India (GoI) in energy efficiency, and the Street Lighting National Programme (SNLP) celebrated 10 years of successful implementation.


      - Both programmes were launched by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi on January 5, 2015.

      - The schemes are being implemented by Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) under the Ministry of Power (MoP).

      - It was initially launched as the Domestic Efficient Lighting Programme (DELP) and later renamed UJALA, with the goal of delivering affordable, energy-efficient LED bulbs, tube lights, and fans to millions of households across India.

Main Point :-   (i) By January 6, 2025, the scheme has distributed 36.87 crore LED bulbs, leading to annual electricity savings worth Rs 19,153 crore.

      (ii) As of January 6, 2025, over 1.34 crore LED streetlights have been installed across Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) and Gram Panchayats (GPs) under the SNLP programme.

(iii) Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) is a joint venture of four power sector PSUs: NTPC Limited, Power Finance Corporation Limited, REC Limited, and POWERGRID Corporation of India Limited.
