Punjab becomes the 5th state to achieve 100% piped water supply coverage for rural households.

In December 2024, Hardeep Singh Mundian, Minister for Water Supply and Sanitation, Punjab, announced that Punjab has become the fifth state in India to achieve 100% piped water supply for rural households under the "Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) - Har Ghar Jal (HGJ)" Scheme.


      - Under the leadership of Bhagwant Singh Mann, Chief Minister of Punjab, the Water Supply and Sanitation Department achieved this milestone, ensuring clean drinking water and improved sanitation facilities for the rural population.

      - As of December 2024, all states and Union Territories (UTs) in India have more than 50% coverage of tap water connections in rural households, with 11 states and UTs achieving 100% coverage.

     

Main Point :-   (i) Punjab implemented 15 major canal water projects in 1,706 villages, benefiting 25 lakh people and 4 lakh families, and achieved Open Defecation Free (ODF) status with 5.64 lakh household toilets and 1,340 community toilets.

      (ii) Waste management facilities were set up in 3,366 villages for solid waste, 9,909 villages for grey water, along with 23 plastic waste management units and 20 district-level biogas plants.

(iii) Har Ghar Jal (HGJ) is a flagship scheme launched in 2019 under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) by the Ministry of Jal Shakti, aiming to provide 55 liters of tap water per person per day to every rural household in India.
