The Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) is an initiative launched by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce & Industry (MoC&I), Government of India, aimed at transforming digital commerce in India.


      - The goal is to promote open networks for goods and services across digital or electronic platforms.

      - It started as a pilot project in April 2022 in five Indian cities: New Delhi, Bengaluru, Coimbatore, Bhopal, and Shillong.

      - ONDC uses an open-sourced approach, which works on open specifications and network protocols, independent of specific platforms.

Main Point :-   (i) ONDC was established as a non-profit Section-8 company on December 31, 2021, with a capital of Rs. 500 crore and is incubated by the Quality Council of India (QCI), which was later joined by Mumbai-based Protean eGov Technologies Limited as its co-founder.

      (ii) ONDC aims to create a level playing field for sellers, buyers, and service providers across India, with a special focus on Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

(iii) It functions as a unified platform where stakeholders can interact freely, without being limited by exclusive ecosystems.
