Obituary

Dr. Kattungal Subrahmanyan Manilal, popularly known as K.S. Manilal, a celebrated botanist and Padma Shri awardee, passed away on January 1, 2025, at the age of 86 in Thrissur, Kerala. He was born on September 17, 1938, in the Kingdom of Cochin (now Kerala).


      - In 2020, Dr. Manilal was honored with the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, for his significant contributions to the field of science.

      - Dr. Manilal devoted 35 years to the research, translation, and annotation of the ancient botanical manuscript Hortus Malabaricus, preserving its knowledge for the modern era.

     

Main Point :-   (i) Dr. K.S. Manilal introduced 19 plant species to the scientific community, with four species named in his honor.

      (ii) He authored or co-authored 15 books and published over 200 research papers, showcasing his dedication to botanical science.
