GoI Announces USD 500,000 Relief Aid to Vanuatu After Devastating Earthquake.

On January 2, 2025, the Government of India (GoI) announced relief assistance of USD 500,000 (Rs 4.3 crore) to Vanuatu, a Pacific island nation, to support relief, rehabilitation, and reconstruction efforts following a devastating earthquake. The earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.4, struck near the coast of Vanuatu on December 17, 2024, resulting in widespread destruction and loss of life.


      - Vanuatu has been ranked as the most at-risk country globally on the United Nations (UN) World Risk Index (WRI) since its inception in 2011, due to its vulnerability to natural disasters.

     

     

Main Point :-   (i) India has been a reliable partner in humanitarian efforts, especially under the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC).

      (ii) India's commitment to providing Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) highlights its broader commitment to Disaster Risk Reduction and Management, as part of the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2019.
