In December 2024, Union Minister CR Patil of the Ministry of Jal Shakti (MoJS) released the Dynamic Ground Water Resource Assessment Report for India for the year 2024. The assessment was carried out by the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) in collaboration with various states and union territories. This report is intended to guide stakeholders in implementing necessary interventions for effective groundwater management.


      - According to the report, India's total annual groundwater recharge stands at 446.90 Billion Cubic Meters (BCM).

      - The assessed annual extractable groundwater resource is 406.19 BCM, with a total groundwater extraction for all uses of 245.64 BCM.

      - The average groundwater extraction level across the country is reported to be 60.47%.

Main Point :-   (i) In December 2024, Union Minister Chandrakant Raghunath Patil of the Ministry of Jal Shakti (MoJS) released the Annual Ground Water Quality Report for the country for the year 2024.

      (ii) This report marks the first time that a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for groundwater quality monitoring has been adopted, ensuring consistency in data collection, examination, and interpretation across India.

(iii) The groundwater assessment, conducted by the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), can be utilized for implementing appropriate remedial measures and for the development of policies by various stakeholders.
