Sanjiv Ranjan Appointed Secretary General of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA).
Appointment
In December 2024, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced the appointment of Senior Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer Sanjiv Ranjan as the Secretary General of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) Secretariat in Ebene, Mauritius. He succeeds Salman Al-Farisi of Indonesia.
- His term will begin on January 1, 2025, and will last for three years, ending on January 31, 2026, or until further orders, whichever occurs earlier.
- Prior to this appointment, Sanjiv Ranjan served as the Officer on Special Duty in the MEA.
- The Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), founded in 1997, is an inter-governmental organization that promotes regional economic cooperation across the Indian Ocean and currently comprises 23 member states and 12 dialogue partners, including major global players like China, the USA, and the European Union.
Main Point :- (i) Sanjiv Ranjan joined the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) in 1993 and has had a distinguished career in diplomacy, focusing on multilateral and bilateral cooperation.
(ii) From 1995 to 2009, he held several diplomatic positions in Indian embassies in Madrid and Lima, as well as at the Permanent Mission of India in New York, USA. From 2006 to 2009, he served as the Deputy High Commissioner of India to Mauritius.
(iii) Sanjiv Ranjan served as India's Ambassador to Argentina from 2016 to 2019, with additional accreditation to Uruguay and Paraguay, and later as Ambassador to Colombia from 2019 to 2022, with accreditation to Ecuador. Most recently, he served as an Officer on Special Duty (Secretary Rank) at the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Government of India (GoI), where he handled personnel, establishment, and e-governance.
