MoSPI: Monthly per capita expenditure rose by 9% in rural areas and approximately 8% in urban areas in 2023-24.

In December 2024, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI) released the results of the Household Consumption Expenditure Survey: 2023-24 (HCES: 2023-24). According to the survey, the average Monthly Per Capita Consumption Expenditure (MPCE) in rural and urban India was estimated to be Rs 4,122 and Rs 6,996, respectively, in 2023-24. This is based on actual spending and does not include the value of items received for free through social welfare programs.


      - The average MPCE (excluding imputation) in nominal terms has increased by around 8% in urban areas and 9% in rural areas in 2023-24, compared to the previous year (2022-23).

     

     

Main Point :-   (i) The urban-rural gap in MPCE has decreased from 84% in 2011-12 to 71% in 2022-23 and further to 70% in 2023-24, showing that consumption growth in rural areas has been steadily increasing.

      (ii) Sikkim reported the highest MPCE among all states, with Rs 9,377 in rural areas and Rs 13,927 in urban areas for 2023-24.

(iii) Chhattisgarh recorded the lowest MPCE, with Rs 2,739 in rural areas and Rs 4,927 in urban areas for 2023-24.
