Masato Kanda has been elected as the 11th President of the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Appointment

On November 28, 2024, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) Board of Governors elected Masato Kanda as the 11th President of ADB. He will succeed the incumbent, Masatsugu Asakawa, who will leave office on February 23, 2025.


      - Masato Kanda will assume office on February 24, 2025, and complete the unexpired tenure of Masatsugu Asakawa, which ends on November 23, 2026.

      - Before this appointment, Masato Kanda served as Special Advisor to Japan's Prime Minister (PM) and Ministry of Finance.

      - Masato Kanda has held key leadership roles at Japan’s Ministry of Finance, including Vice-Minister of Finance for International Affairs, accumulating nearly four decades of experience.

Main Point :-   (i) During his tenure as Vice-Minister, Japan made a record contribution of over USD 1 billion to the Asian Development Fund’s 13th replenishment (ADF 13).

      (ii) Masato Kanda has held key roles in Japan's Ministry of Finance, including Deputy Commissioner at the Financial Services Agency and Deputy Director-General of the Budget Bureau, while actively engaging in international forums like G7 and G20 to address global policy challenges such as MDB evolution, pandemic prevention, and debt sustainability.

(iii) He served as Chair of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Corporate Governance Committee, overseeing the review of the G20 since 2016, including the review of the G20/OECD Principles of Corporate Governance in 2023. He also served as the Alternate Executive Director for Japan at the World Bank (WB).
