Aisake Valu Eke has been elected as the Prime Minister of Tonga.

Appointment

In December 2024, Aisake Valu Eke, the former Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, was elected as the Prime Minister (PM) of Tonga. He replaced the former PM Hu'akavameiliku Siaosi Sovaleni, who resigned on December 9, 2024. Aisake Valu Eke won the secret ballot in Parliament with 16 votes to 8, defeating the only other candidate, Viliame Latu (the Trade Minister).


      - The swearing-in ceremony is expected to take place on February 3, 2025. He will serve as PM until Tonga's next general election in November 2025.

      - Aisake Valu Eke, an experienced politician, was first elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Tongatapu 5 in the general election of November 2010.

      - Tongatapu 5, the only constituency on Tongatapu (Tonga's main island) that was not won by the party, was the seat where he was re-elected in the 2021 election but lost again.

Main Point :-   (i) Aisake Valu Eke served as the Minister for Finance from 2014 to 2017.

      (ii) In 2008, he was honored with the "Order of Queen Sälote Tupou III" (a knighthood from the Kingdom of Tonga) by the King of Tonga for his personal services to the country.

(iii) Tonga, with its capital Nuku'alofa and currency Tongan pa'anga (TOP), has won the right to host the 2031 Pacific Games, and is currently ruled by King Tupou VI.
