Former Supreme Court Judge Madan Lokur has been appointed as the Chairperson of the UN International Judicial Committee (IJC).

On 19th December 2024, Justice Madan B. Lokur, a former Supreme Court (SC) judge of India, was appointed as the Chairperson of the United Nations (UN) Internal Justice Council (IJC) by UN Secretary-General António Guterres. His tenure will run from 19th December 2024 to 12th November 2028.

  • - Justice Lokur will lead the council, which includes other respected legal experts.
  • - Justice Lokur was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of India on 4th June 2012 and served until his retirement on 30th December 2018.
  • - He was the standing counsel (legal representative) for the Central Government for six years, from 1990 to 1996. In 1997, he was designated as a senior advocate, and in 1998, he became the Additional Solicitor General (ASG) of India.

  • (iii) In 2019, Justice Madan Lokur was appointed as a judge on the non-resident panel of the Supreme Court of Fiji. He made history by becoming the first Indian judge to be appointed to the Supreme Court of another country.
