Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh made history by becoming the youngest-ever World Chess Champion at the age of 18, defeating China's Ding Liren in the decisive 14th and final game. This victory also marked Gukesh as the first teenager to achieve this milestone. The year 2024 has been remarkable for Gukesh, who also won the Candidates tournament and led India to a gold medal at the Chess Olympiad. Born on May 29, 2006, in Chennai, India, Gukesh began playing chess at the age of seven and quickly rose through the ranks, winning multiple youth championships and earning the title of International Master at 12. In August 2023, he became the youngest player ever to reach a rating of 2750 and surpassed Viswanathan Anand as the top-ranked Indian chess player. Gukesh's rapid ascent continued as he won the Candidates tournament, earning a place in the World Championship. His victory against Ding Liren cements his place in chess history and follows in the footsteps of Viswanathan Anand, who won the World Chess Championship four times.
