ICAR-IISR Releases India’s First Ginger Variety IISR Surasa for Vegetable Use

The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the Indian Institute of Spices Research (IISR) have introduced India's first ginger variety specifically for vegetable use, named IISR Surasa. Developed through a farmers’ participatory breeding program, IISR Surasa is a non-pungent cultivar that offers superior organoleptic qualities, making it more appealing for consumption. Scientifically grown, it can yield up to 24.33 tons per hectare. Extensive trials over six years have shown consistent and high output. The variety has been approved by the Kerala State Varietal Release Committee and is ideal for creating dry ginger and growing in polybags. Farmers will have access to its planting material from the upcoming planting season.
