Union Cabinet Approves MoU Between GSI and Italy's CNR-IRPI for Advanced Landslide Prediction and Early Warning
MOUs and Agreement
The Union Cabinet approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Geological Survey of India (GSI) and Italy's Research Institute for Geo-Hydrological Protection (CNR-IRPI) to collaborate on landslide prediction and early warning. This partnership aims to enhance India's Landslide Early Warning Systems (LEWS) to international standards, ensuring better prediction and mitigation of landslide-related damages. The collaboration will focus on developing and operationalizing regional LEWS across India and integrating GSI's data with the PM Gati Shakti initiative.
- The MoU was approved on December 6, 2024.
- GSI established a National Landslide Forecasting (NLFC) facility at GSI, Kolkata.
(i) NLFC provides live forecast reporting in Kalimpong, Darjeeling, and Nilgiri districts. (ii) CNR-IRPI is a leading institution in developing regional LEWS models.
NLFC Locations: Kalimpong & Darjeeling (West Bengal), Nilgiri (Tamil Nadu)
Collaborating Institutions: Geological Survey of India (GSI), Research Institute for Geo-Hydrological Protection (CNR-IRPI)
