NASA Joins Forces with Microsoft to Launch Earth Copilot AI, Simplifying Access to Complex Earth Data.
Science and Technology
In November 2024, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) partnered with Microsoft to develop the Earth Copilot, a custom Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbot designed to respond to users' queries related to Earth with easy-to-understand data.
- The collaboration aims to transform how users can search, discover, and analyse NASA's geospatial data.
- It is part of NASA's Transform to Open Science initiative, which seeks to democratize access to over 100 petabytes of satellite imagery and Earth science data.
Main Points:- (i) The Earth Copilot will use natural language processing to simplify access to NASA data. This allows users to interact with NASA's data repository using plain language queries.
(ii) NASA collaborated with Microsoft to create a proof of concept model using Microsoft's Azure cloud platform and AI capabilities.
(iii) The Earth Copilot chatbot will simplify the process, making the data more simplified and accessible to scientists, educators, policymakers, and the general public.
