Gintautas Paluckas Appointed as Lithuania's New Prime Minister.

Appointment

On November 21, 2024, Gintautas Paluckas, a computer scientist and Social Democrat, was appointed as the Prime Minister (PM) of Lithuania (Baltic country) by President Gitanas NausÄ—da. He was elected by the Seimas, the parliament of Lithuania, with the support of 88 Members of Parliament (MPs) out of 128 MPs.


      - Gintautas Paluckas, deputy leader of the Lithuanian Social Democrats Party (LSDP), will replace incumbent PM Ingrida Å imonytÄ— from the conservative Fatherland Union.

      - He steps into the position after Vilija Blinkeviciute, leader of the LSDP, retained her seat in the European Parliament (EP) and declined both the premiership and a seat in the Seimas.

      - In 2003, he became a member of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP), and his career began with a position as Chief Specialist at Lithuania's social insurance institution, Sodra, from 2003 to 2005. In 2005, he transitioned to serving as an assistant to Justas Paleckis, a Member of the European Parliament.

Main Points:-   (i) Gintautas Paluckas became the Director of Administration for the Vilnius City Municipality from 2007 to 2009.

      (ii) He took on the role of Executive Secretary of the LSDP in 2013 and became a member of both the LSDP Council and its Board.

(iii) He served as the Deputy Mayor of Vilnius from 2015 to 2019. He also served as LSDP leader between 2017 and 2021.
