Indian Navy Conducts 4th Edition of Coastal Defence Exercise 'Sea Vigil'.

The Indian Navy (IN) conducted the 4th edition of the Pan-India Coastal Defence Exercise 'Sea Vigil' in two phases. The Coastal Defence and Security Readiness Evaluation (CDSRE) phase was conducted from November 13 to 19, 2024, and the tactical phase was conducted from November 21 to 22, 2024, across all coastal states and union territories (UT) including Kerala, Lakshadweep, and Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The exercise aimed to take stock of maritime security, including coastal defence and offshore security.
- The exercise covers the country's maritime capability, encompassing the entire 11,098 kilometres (km) coastline and 2.4 million square kilometres (km²) of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
- Sea Vigil is conducted biennially by the IN since 2019. It was designed to validate and enhance measures adopted to reinforce coastal defence post the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.
- It also focused on strengthening the security of coastal assets like ports, oil rigs, and single-point moorings and raising awareness among coastal communities about maritime security with the participation of fishing communities, National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadets, and Bharat Scouts.
Main Points:- (i) During the exercise, the IN also conducted Coastal Defence and Security Readiness evaluations at 51 locations and maritime awareness sessions at more than 60 sites.
(ii) The exercise involved diverse stakeholders, including 6 ministries and 21 organizations, such as the Indian Navy (IN), Indian Army (IA), Indian Air Force (IAF), Indian Coast Guard (ICG), State Marine Police, Customs, Border Security Force (BSF), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Port Authorities, and Fisheries Department.
(iii) For the first time, officials from the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS) participated in the CDSRE phase of the exercise in Gujarat and West Bengal (WB).
