SC Permits Light Motor Vehicle (LMV) Licence Holders to Drive Transport Vehicles up to 7,500 kg

The Supreme Court (SC) of India has ruled that drivers holding a Light Motor Vehicle (LMV) licence can drive transport vehicles with an unladen weight of up to 7,500 kilograms (kg) without requiring additional authorisation under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.


      - A five-judge Constitution Bench, headed by former Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud, reviewed the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

      - The Bench clarified that additional requirements under the Act are applicable only for vehicles exceeding 7,500 kg, such as medium and heavy goods or passenger vehicles.

     

Main Points:-   Road safety remains a critical public health issue globally, with over 1.7 lakh fatalities in road accidents reported in India during 2023.
