Zimbabwe Unveils 'ZIMSAT-2' Satellite to Strengthen Space Program.

Science and Technology

Republic of Zimbabwe successfully launched its second satellite, ZIMSAT-2 on the Soyuz-2.1b spacecraft from Vostochny Cosmodrome, in Amur Oblast, Russia.

      - The launch was a joint effort between the Zimbabwe National Geo-Spatial and Space Agency (ZINGSA) and Southwest State University in Kursk, Russia, with help from Zimbabwean engineers and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) students based in Russia.

      - This launch follows the success of Zimbabwe's first satellite, ZIMSAT-1, which was launched in 2022, highlighting the country's ongoing advancements in space technology and innovation.

Main Points:-   (i) ZIMSAT-2, a low Earth observation satellite equipped with a high-resolution multispectral camera (8-meter spatial resolution), is designed to support agriculture by monitoring crop health and resource mapping, aid disaster response through early warning systems, enhance environmental surveillance for sustainable practices, and assist geographical research, including the identification of potential mineral resources.

(ii) The satellite is equipped with a data transmission system that enables it to send collected information back to a ground control station and operates across multiple spectra, including visible and infrared, significantly enhancing its observation capabilities.
