Thiruvananthapuram Becomes First Indian City to Win Global Award for Sustainable Urban Development.

The Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, has become the 1st Indian city to win the Global Award for Sustainable Development in Cities, also known as the Shanghai Award.


      - The award ceremony took place on 2nd Nov 2024, in Alexandria, Egypt, coinciding with World Cities Day 2024.

      - The award was received by Thiruvananthapuram's Mayor, Arya Rajendran, along with the CEO of Smart City Thiruvananthapuram Ltd., Rahul Sharma.

     

Main Points:-   (i) This year, 5 global cities were selected for the award, including Agadir (Morocco), Melbourne (Australia), Doha (Qatar), and Iztapalapa (Mexico), alongside Thiruvananthapuram.

      (ii) The Global Award for Sustainable Development in Cities, launched by UN Habitat and Shanghai Municipality, recognizes cities advancing sustainable practices aligned with the 2030 Agenda and New Urban Agenda, focusing on SDG 11 to create inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities.
