National Unity Day, or Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, is celebrated every year across India on October 31 to honor the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, known as the "Iron Man of India." He earned the title "Sardar" for his exceptional leadership.


      - He was the first Deputy Prime Minister and the Home Minister of Independent India from 1947 to 1950.

      - 31 October 2024 marks the 149th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

      - On 15 August 1947, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel took oath as the first Deputy Prime Minister, as well as the first Home Minister of independent India in the newly formed government under PM Jawaharlal Nehru.

Main Points:-   (i) In 2014, the Government of India (GoI), under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, announced the observance of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's birth anniversary as National Unity Day, or Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, to honor his contributions to unifying the nation.

      (ii) The first National Unity Day was observed on 31 October 2014.

(iii) Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was born on October 31, 1875, in Nadiad, Gujarat, and was a lawyer by profession.
