Duma Boko of the United Democratic Congress (UDC) has been declared the 6th President of Botswana.

Appointment

On November 1, 2024, the 54-year-old Duma Gideon Boko of the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) coalition was declared the 6th President of Botswana after securing 25 out of 61 parliamentary seats.


      - He defeated the incumbent President Mokgweetsi Masisi of the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), who won only one seat. BDP had been in power since Botswana's independence in 1966.

     

     

Main Points:-   (i) Born on December 31, 1969, Duma Boko, a human rights lawyer, began his career as a law professor at the University of Botswana (UB) in 1993.

      (ii) He became the leader of the Botswana National Front (BNF) in 2010 and played a key role in forming the UDC in 2012. He had previously run for President in the 2014 and 2019 elections.

(iii) He has served as the President of both the BNF and the UDC
